I've had many an external hard drive and I've been able to always go into Disk Utility and reformat it to Os journaled (so I can run my movies with iMovie of it). However, recently purchased the Maxtor One Touch 4 and when I try to reformat it to Os journaled it always gives me an error. The only option that works for reformating is MS-DOS FAT.
How do I reformat my Maxtor one touch III with a Mac 0S X; Reformat maxtor on a mac; Maxtor one touch 4; Maxtor one touch plus 250 GB-unallocated partion-disk not intialized. I have a 250 GB Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini and I unplugged the Power Data USB without properly ejecting the hard drive. When I realized my mistake I immediately checked on my files and they were gone.
I've tried to research this but can't seem to find the solution I am after. I don't care at all about the stupid software it comes with, nor the 'one touch' ability (I use time machine anyway); I just want to be able to reformat this thing so I can have my 1TB of external hard drive to use!! You'll have no problems using it as GUID. If you have another look at the options under the disk utility tab it'll tell you more about your choice, whether it'll be appropriate as a start up volume etc. Do a get info on your drive now and if it doesn't already say journaled just reformat, (under the erase tab) choosing that option. If your main HD is case sensitive then follow that convention, if not the leave it just as Mac OS Extended Journaled. As for an explanation I couldn't tell you the difference in plain english but one of the regulars lurking about here will soon I suspect.
